Samuel Wilson was a meat packer from Troy, New York. He supplied barrels of beef to the US Army during the War of 1812. Wilson stamped the barrels with “U.S.” for United Sates; the soldiers began referring to the grub as “Uncle Sam’s. From that day forward the United States gained its nickname. Uncle Sam is the United States of America, the people that built our country one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Lyrics

UNCLE SAM
Chad Lee / Dess Fletcher

My Uncle Sam was a miner in Kentucky with lungs chalked full of coal
Every morning he’d wake up take a shallow breath back to work he’d go
Puttin’ hot food on tables and heatin’ homes
Workin’ hard for a dream higher than that dark hole

My Uncle Sam was a welder in Manhattan puttin’ fire to a steal beam
Fifty stories up hangin’ from a rope so high he could barely breathe
Buildin’ cities buildin’ hope and buildin’ dreams
Buildin’ a future for the future for you and me

CHORUS 1:
That’s my Uncle Sam, That’s my Uncle Sam
All the men who gave me wings to follow my dreams in this promise land
That’s my UNCLE SAM

My Uncle Sam was a preacher in Texas under a big white tent
He’d stand tall mighty and proud up on that ol’ pulpit
Preachin’ the truth from town to town with an Amen
He’d tell em’ all kneel down say a prayer repent

CHORUS 2:
That’s my Uncle Sam, That’s my Uncle Sam
All the men who gave me faith taught me to pray and made me who I am
That’s my UNCLE SAM

BRIDGE:
My Uncle Sam built up this great nation
My Uncle Sam tore down segregation
My Uncle Sam taught us all salvation
My Uncle Sam took a bullet for our freedom

CHORUS 3:
That’s my Uncle Sam, That’s my Uncle Sam
All the men who sacrificed fought and died for all Americans
Yea..That’s my Uncle Sam
All the men who gave me wings to follow my dreams in this promise land
That’s my UNCLE SAM
That’ my UNCLE SAM
Made me who I am
That’s my UNCLE SAM
